THE URGENCY OF SUPPORTING SOCIAL DIFFERENCE RESEARCH

Now, more than ever, we know that the future is uncertain. The year 2020 is bringing seismic shifts, as existing systems are shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic, crucial elections, and uprisings for social justice. For well over a decade, the Center for the Study of Social Difference (CSSD) has been tackling the difficult questions across issues of gender, race, class, and other social inequalities globally, and we are ready for this moment. Your gift fosters the conversations that lead to new knowledge and real impact, in areas of migration, gender violence, climate change, new technologies, medical justice, and more.

POSITIVE IMPACT ACROSS THE UNIVERSITY AND BEYOND

We are unique in bringing together faculty and students from ALL of Columbia's schools to research the issues that most affect society locally and globally. At CSSD, the Arts and Sciences come into conversation with Columbia’s professional schools and Global Centers, along with scholars, artists, writers, and policymakers in the United States and abroad, deepening Columbia’s partnerships at home and internationally. Your gift directly supports: graduate fellowships, collaborations with community organizations, development of new publications, new co-taught courses, and faculty time for research.

CREATE CHANGE

Housed at the Center for the Study of Social Difference (CSSD), the Women Creating Change initiative is the home at Columbia University for interdisciplinary projects addressing problems facing women and women's roles in making a change. We support University-wide, three-year working groups that publish books, create new curricula, and engage communities beyond the University. Your gift helps faculty across Columbia who are asking the hard questions in women-focused research, as well as the students they mentor. Our projects address issues of social inclusion, healthcare access, gender justice, and underrepresented stories from women around the world.

IMPACT LIVES AND BUILD A BETTER FUTURE

How will Columbia prepare new generations of leaders attuned to social justice for women? Your support brings together the best minds at the University, with faculty and students working alongside artists, activists, and policy makers, to focus on the impact and experiences of women. Current and upcoming projects address the following themes: women’s heart health; motherhood and technology; transnational black feminisms; nursing leadership in global pandemics; menstrual health; gender and the city; and more. Your gift directly supports student fellowships, new interdisciplinary courses, publications, conferences and exhibitions, and websites that provide valuable resources to communities around the world.
